BIM Compliance – Where are we with BIM Standards?

Since the inception of the Governments BIM mandate in 2016 that all government building projects are completed to Level 2 BIM compliance, BIM is now widely practised across the AEC industry for all types of building projects. BIM standards are ever-evolving as lessons are learnt and improvements to the collaborative BIM process are implemented.

At Michael Gallie & Partners, we advise clients on the use of BIM in their building development projects so that a collaborative approach with other design team members works seamlessly from the outset and that no issues arise further downstream in the lifecycle of the project.

What BIM standards are currently being used?

The main industry BIM standard used widely across the AEC industry in the UK and published by BSI in 2013 is the PAS 1192 series. It is a widely adopted and used UK BIM standard that the AEC industry adheres to. Not surprisingly PAS 1192 is very much aligned to the way the UK AEC industry works but does not always translate well to other international regions practising BIM.  In early 2019 BS EN ISO 19650 BIM standards was published. BS EN ISO 19650 BIM is an essence an enhanced PAS 1192 series standard but to make the new standard more applicable to an international audience practising BIM, BS EN ISO 19650 has been written in a way that allows greater flexibility for the different regions to add and meet their own specific information requirements. Although not currently widely adopted in the UK BS EN ISO 19650 BIM standard will start to grow in use and rival the PAS/BS 1192 series. Regards BIM classification standards Uniclass 2015 is the main one used in the UK AEC industry. Assuming the training and skills of people continue to evolve BIM will grow across the AEC industry as the cost benefits for the design and construction process are realised amongst a larger informed community.
